I have a 1995 chevy cavalier, 2.2L, and just this friday had my alternator and battery changed. My belt is also tight, and not frayed in the slightest... still looks brand new! But when i am driving, the battery light still flickers on and off... or just stays on, as well as my turn signals are slower and my ABS light comes on and doesn't go away until i turn my car off! I had this problem when i changed my alternator and battery, and it seems like for only half the day the battery light and ABS light stayed off. We've checked for corrosion and there isn't any, and all the connections are tight.... i just don't want my car dieing on my again when i am driving, expecially with my 2 young kids in the car.... and if it's the wiring harness how would i tell!? Any info would be great on what i can check for! Thanks... hope i didn't stump any of yous.... :)

The battery light comes on when the alternator is not "outputting" enough voltage to keep the battery charged.

Slow turn signals mean not enough energy to properly operate them.

I'll bet you had a faulty alternator installed. Take it to the shop that did the work and have them put a volt meter in the alternator and see if if is putting out enough electricity.

You might want to "google" some tech stats to see what the factory specs are for the alternator.

Your problem is simple....you do not have enough electricity to keep the battery charged.

The repair shop will try to give you a song and dance but stay with them and continue to be insistent that something is wrong and that they did not fix it.

They could have installed the wrong alternator that is actually working but is not outputting the correct amount of electricity.

I would not worry about the ABS. That will go away when you have enough juice going to the right places.

Don't back down.

Good luck.

PS If you have a Tech School close to you, they love items like this.

You should check the voltage at the battery when the car is running and make sure the new alternator is actually putting out the correct amps, without that the abs system will show a trouble code because it isnt reading enough voltage to operate.

Whoever changed your alt. and batt. didn't do their job and check that all was working. You may have an alt. fuse out or no connection between alt. and batt. The "mekanik" needs to check the alt. out put at the battery with engine idling. should be 14 to 15 volts across the batt. terminals. The batt, should read 13.5 volts with key off. Take it back and tell them to fix it as they should have done in the first place. Stay away from dealers and don't go back for any more service at the place that did this job.

Alternator is your problem. Possible short in the lines but I doubt it. Best bet is to grab a buddy who knows how to use a wrench and take the alternator and the battery to any auto-zone or O'reily auto parts store to have them tests. My money is on that alternator, and since its already out of the car and in the parts shop you won't have to pay for a core charge when you buy a new one.
