It is the order in which mathematical operations should occur to get proper answer. The order is to remove parentheses first, then do exponents, followed by divide, multipl, add, and subtract.
Thus if you see 8/4*5 the answer is 10 because you do the divide 1st and then the multiply. You do not interpret this as 8/20 = 2/5. Calculators use this order and if you do not enter the data in the correct order it will give you the wrong answer.

this is an awesome website to help you- once you have read it through there are questions at the end you can do.
basically order of ops is a way for math folks to agree on the right answer to a question saying one sign or operation) is done first before another.
hope that helps

B - brackets done first
example: (4 + 5) - 5 you would do the (4+5) first then minus 5
E - exponents done next
example: 4^3 + 2 figure out what 4^3 is then add 2 to it
you get the point from here on out I'll assume...
D - division
M - multiplication
A - addition
S - subtraction
B.E.D.M.A.S - Betty's Eyes Dared Me All Summer
it's simple :)
