Watch Han's Christian Anderson's version of The Little Mermaid. It's animated anime style movie with the HUGE eyes and stuff. It's about an hour long. It's super sad and made me sob really hard at the end. It tells the original story of the Little Mermaid before Disney made it all happy go lucky.

I like this kind of animes, the best i have seen are:
-Kanon 2006
-Air Tv
-Elfen Lied
-Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
-Saikano
In my opinion, these 5 animes are the best, very sad, and are short as you asked, maximum of 24 episodes per serie.

Yes, I agree that Elfen Lied (13 eps) is one of the saddest anime that I have watched. Then, there is also Fruits Basket (26 eps). These two drove me to tears. Really. By the way, I was LMAO when someone said DBZ :)

Air is an excellent anime that is only 13 episodes as well as Elfen Lied (14 episodes). Get your tissues ready for those (I mean it)! I normally do not cry when I watch anime but these two series, I sure did!

gilgamesh is like 26 eps... and i think it was very sad. i cried so much in the end.
