sears craftsman 21.5 hp the rider is only 7 years old it has not been abused but it has been used a lot

The Craftsman Hydrostatic trans-axle is a completely non-serviceable unit. If it gives any problems replacement is the only option. Sorry!
You can go to www3.sears.com input your model number to bring up your mower, find and price the trans-axle to see if repair is worth it to you. This price will be for parts only, this site can not include installation labor.

What color is the smoke? Blue means oil is burning and is usually caused by worn rings. Black is a very rich (way too much gas) situation caused by trouble in the fuel delivery system. White is coolant flowing through the combustion chamber caused by a head gasket failure. Heads don't need to be replaced for this just the gasket (might want to resurface the head at the same time to make sure it's perfectly flat.

Are you sure it is the transmission and not the belt? Also there is a fan on the transmission that is driven by the drive belt. Make sure it is moving freely and isn't all plugged with grass. That transmission turns so slow I don't know what would cause the smoke.
