If I successfully install Windows XP on an external hard drive on one machine, can I hook that external hard drive to another machine and run Windows XP on it from the external drive? Don't ask why I would do that.

The answer is no... reason, unless the two systems are exactly alike then you will have problems with the drivers... and hardware..

if you download any version of Linux you can boot up from the live cd... on any machine,, and you can do everything running from the CD.. after you get used to it then you install it

Linux is a free operating system that puts MS Vista to shame.. and all the software you'll ever need is also free....
