Many folks think a young tree is alive, because it is PROVING that it is growing, by a visual to those who think abortion is not killing a life. If the young tree could speak to a human about the life of a growing child, what do you think the tree might say? Please don't kill me, I am ALIVE, or what? Cells are alive, are they not? If they are dead, please explain how? You came from cells, didn't you?

Fetuses are by any possible medical definition "alive." The only question is are they viable or not. Any person who just had a car accident and is on a ventilator is not viable either. Should we kill them?
I used to be pro-choice but after I had a serious illness I felt a lot different about the uniqueness of each human life. No matter how unfortunate or inconvenient the circumstances are, that person may still grow up to be a great blessing to his or her, or to the family allowed to adopt it (or maybe even invent a cure for cancer or war! Or even figure how to get Republicans out of office!)

Many things grow but are not alive. (crystals) Many more things grow and are alive, but do not have a mind. Many things grow and have a mind but are not human and randomly killed, sometimes for sport(elephants, whales). Sometimes folk make stuff up, or lay claim to a way of talking that gives them political power over others.
If your finger gets cut off, sufficient technology will make a whole new person from it, it will not be you. It will be alive, it will look like you, and likely share a lot in common in amazing ways, but dumping the finger into medical waste is not Murder.
The way you decide which part is Human and what is medical waste is the mind. As with all things the things that make any critter most special arrive last, that is the way of things. In humans the mind is the most special and arrives last, even after birth, as a full size head might kill the mother.
Likewise only a small part of the brain contains the mind, if it has not arrived, or if it never arrives (as is the cause for most late term abortions), that everything else is working is of little consequence. Also if that part of the brain is gone, the mind is dead even if you can ghoulishly keep the rest of the body running for years.

For something that would seem so cut and dry, this abortion debate has gone on for way too long.
The question is not if a cell or a tree is alive. The question is when it becomes human life. As others pointed, sperm and ova can lead to human life. A fetus can lead to human life. So at what point does human life begin and a spirit enter the fetus?
That is a question our science will never answer. I think only common sense can answer this. Common sense tells me human life begins as opposite to when human life ends, when the heart in the fetus start pumping blood to the brain.
Once the brain is activated, it is human life and shouldn't be aborted.

The simple truth is that science is currently looking for life in space not in an animal form but in a single celled form. Why do they consider it life? Well its because the cell has a distinct genetic makeup. Interestingly enough that is the same as an unborn baby. Whats the difference between the two? The life in space has the luxury of not being threatened and its "life" status is not called in to question because is not human. Sad really!
ck4829- Your comparing apples to oranges. Speaking biologically cancer is an uncontrolled change, will never be independent, and isn't a normal biological process.

Lets see.
If the tree hugger plant a tree from a seed then it is alive but if the seed is planted in them then it is not.

A storm grows. Public opinion grows. Sometimes you have a growing suspicion. You can grow crystals in a mason jar.
Just because something's growing doesn't make it alive. People have to think it is.

Cancer has cells and it can grow, but it needs to be destroyed on sight.
I am actually pro-life, but this is a bad argument.

Trees do not possess the ability to DECIDE if their seeds should grow.
Human beings do.
