Scrape it with a knife after putting an ice cube on it. Alternatively, you can buy something from the chemist which will do the trick - sorry I can't remember what it is called!

The freezing then ironing thing mentioned above usually works.
However, I once got gum on a pair of smart wool trousers, and it just wouldn't come out. Then I remembered that if you chew gum too soon after brushing your teeth, it kind of breaks up and loses its stickiness. Sure enough, toothpaste did the trick. Consider trying this as a last resort, but be careful it doesn't damage the material.

I recommend Goo Gone (Target, Wal-mart) for washable fabrics. It can leave an oily spot but this comes out with regular washing. There is also a family of products from Carbona that work well. There is a specific one for chewing gum and you can consult the label for fabric safety. They come in small yellow plastic bottles in the laundry soap section at Target, Kroger, Albertson's and probably others.

put brown paper over the gum and put hot iron on,this should raise gum out of fibres, then re-put in fridge, but do not scrape as this will ruin the fibres.

Put it back into the freezer, when it is totally frozen, you should be able to push it off with a knife, them iron it with a grease proof paper, it will finally be gone. Good luck.

gently rub out with a little white spirit (do not use turpentine) on a towel cloth,
it works, it also removes blue tack etc from carpets,

Lala is right!!! that GooGone is fantastic. It also takes out crayon, those nasty sticky labels on plastic and such, and dozens of other things that you have a hard time cleaning!!
