Wow! This is one of those questions that requires a rather long answer. So here goes! And by the way... I am a former sound engineer so I do know what I am talking about.

First, Some of it will depend on the time you want to record. If you have a day job and plan to record at night... a lot of studios will charge you extra after 10-11pm.

Generally speaking. The clock starts at the start time you booked. Whether you show up on time or not! There is a "clock stop" for a one hour meal break, and every four hours the clock stops for a 15 minute break as well.

Also, you will be billed for all time booked, even if you finish early. And time is always booked and billed hourly. So estimate your time well. Quarter and half hours cannot be booked. And even if you use just an extra 5 -10 minutes of time... you WILL be charged for a full hour!

Overtime is usually charged at the hourly rate plus 50 percent. Or rather, the standard "time and a half" Cancellations- Most studios follow this schedule:

7 day notice= full refund
72 hours-6 days= 50 percent refund
25-48 hours= 25 percent refund
24 hours or less= no refund, even if the studio can re-sell the booking time.

You are allowed a one hour load-in time prior to the start of your session, to get your gear set up. But to pack up usually just 30 minutes.

Terms - usually run 50-25-25.

Two weeks before the session you need a 50 percent deposit on your time. Then once the session begins you need to pay the next 25 percent. Then, until you pay the final 25 percent (if you haven't already done so)... The studio will not release your masters. Plus they will usually charge you an extra 15 percent above the quoted studio booking rate for having to hold back the release of your masters. So always pay on time and in full if you can.

As for the times and rates. Most studios require you to book a minimum of two hours. But from my experience PER SONG.. Plan to break it down this way, for the average 4-5 piece band

1-2 hours for the main instruments such as guitars, drums and keyboards

1-2 hours for overdubbing and 2nd guitars, rhythm guitars, bass etc...

1-2 hours for all vocals

1 hour for stings, percussion

4 hours for mixing

Plan to spend about $85-150 per hour for studio time, These rates will include a house engineer and 68 track digital rooms. Usually rates will be cheaper per hour if you book multiple days. Though some studios with a top engineer can run considerably more.

As for how to get signed. I wish I could help you with suggestions. But I know the technical end of the biz. not the talent end.

A good book for you to read/refer to is "What Every Musician Should Know Before Entering The Recording Studio" written by producer, Don McKinzie

You won't get as good a result as a really high-grade studio, but if you have a computer you can use you can buy some software and record on the computer using the software - its what I do, and so do lots of other people now. This will probably a lot less expensive than buying studio time, and you can learn a lot about looping, etc., by just learning some recording program or programs. Good luck!
