I tried signing up but it runs very slowly and jerkily, and the Orientation Island doesn't seem very well structured - it was quite difficult to find some of the mandatory tutorials. Is it worth persisting?

No. It costs real money to do anything interesting in the game world, there are real gangsters in there who will try to steal your stuff and mess you around, even prostitutes who will tout for virtual sex and charge you real money for the pleasure!

I don't know about you but when I pay someone real money for a house or sex then I expect the real thing. Not that I have ever paid for sex.

Oh yeah, and there are some real head-cases in there who treat it like it's their own private real life world, and get all touchy if you stray onto 'their' land even though there's nothing to indicate that it's private. There are far too many rules and too much of the real world in there.

The thing that finally stopped me from playing was the very frequent requirement to download the latest version (a 65MB download) in order to log in, typically every week or two. Hated that!

I have second life too, on my laptop. Haven't used it for a while. Mostly when I use it, it's fine then it freezes and sometimes you start moving very slow and it messes up. It need better graffics and still needs a lot of work to it.
