Add a cup of bleach to your next washing. (Don't put anything else in there except whites.)

I would go with the bleach and detergent idea to make it fade faster (but without whites or they may turn colors too!). A small amount of bleach (like a tbsp each time you wash it until you get the desired result), wash it alone on a small load setting. Do not use the kind that says it makes clothing brighter and whites whiter. You could try bleach alternative too.
If you are planning to buy a shirt, why not check out GoodWill and Wal-mart. Good will should have plenty black shirts already fading towards grey (if you're wanting a certain shade of faded) and walmarts should have plenty grey shirts.

No, you will ruin the t-shirt before it becomes a true grey. The best you will get from washing it over and over is a faded black, which will not be grey. If you use bleach, then you risk getting bleach stains or an uneven fading.

I would just suggest buying a grey t-shirt since they cost <$10. If you must transform this one, then your best bet is to buy RIT Color Remover ( http://www.ritdye.com/ ) which will fade the shirt and then you can dye it grey if the result is too light.

It would probably take ten washings or so, considering it would have to be faded enough to look gray. Also, you would have to use a super-strong detergent (I think there is one called Laundry Power Detergent) in order to make this work.
Be warned: 100% cotton will shrink and quickly! Buy at least twice your size if YOU plan to wear the soon-to-be gray shirt!
