I empathize is when I make somebody else's emotion, mine. I share the feeling, I become one with the other person. The word comes from the greek en + pathos, etymologically meaning "in the passion" where passion here means that which is being experienced on the emotional level.
I sympathize comes from syn + pathos, meaning I am close to the feeling, I feel sorry about the other person's feeling, I am getting sad but I do not make it my own.

To empathize is to place yourself in another person's shoes, particularly when they're facing adversity. It's usually coupled with statments like "I know how that feels," or "I know I would not be happy either."
Sympathize is to feel pity for somebody who you don't necessarily have empathy for.
I do either or both, depending on the circumstance.

Nothing...Enough is enough..In my life i had both ''qualities''...Now no..People and society are so false, that this ''procedure''makes me really tired..
At the end i prefere to dedicate my time to myself instead of palying the role of ''Freud''..It turned out to me so bad, they transfered me their bad sides, and certainly...never a recognition of what i felt or did...
Isnt it time to wake up?I think so...
