I have an experiment in which I have to calculate the time it takes for a weight to falls a certain distance and I would like to know what the type of sensor I could use.

Due to the procedure of the experiment I need the sensor to detect a particular part of the weight and for this reason an object( i dont know what) could be attached to the weight. Could I use an infra red sensor that measures the temperature of this specific object which is attached to the weight?

If not what else?

Thank You

1. Use a movie camera or camcorder and count the frames between the start and stop events
2. Use two photo sensors

3. Use two electromagnetic sensors.

4. Use a tape with time marks.

Please note that measuring a temperature is not a good idea for a number of reasons.

Have fun

The most common method is to let some part of the weight interrupt a light beam and detect that with a photosensor. Detection by temperature sensing is unnecessarily complicated and subject to a time lag. To prevent rotation of the weight from affecting the measurement you need to constrain it with some sort of arrangement (e.g., eyebolts and a vertical rod).

You need a position sensor combined with motion detection.
