Why are LEDs so much more efficient at converting energy to light than incandescent and flourescent lights? What goes on in the internal workings of an LED that is different from a normal bulb?

incandescent light is generated by heating a metal or other source - these lights can add uncomfortable heat to the sace being lighted
flourescent uses a vacuum tube and a minimal amount of mercury )very poisonous) more efficient than incandescent an also low heat
