annotate means to put notes about it. usually with a small 1, 2, 3 etc next to the text you are talking about and then at the bottom of the page your notes are written by the number. but notes can also be written in the margins.

To annotate is to just add a notation that will add to your paper in some way or clarify a point. It adds to the understanding of the reader. For example I'm reading an autobiography of Helen Keller and at times she talks about someone in her life that was probably well known back in her time but not now. So there's often an annotation letting me know to whom she's referring.

It means to footnote it... if the poem uses a word in another language or which is obscure, tell us what it means. if the poem has an allusion to something else, tell us to what it is referring (and why). Basically it is the footnotes in the poem in your book or the notes printed along the side (not the handwritten notes from the person who had the book before you)
