Has the art of spelling correctly AND using correct grammar become a thing of the past? With the advent of internet and text messaging, it just seems our youth and younger adults (25 and younger), have very limited skill-sets when it comes to writing anything and everything- ex. simple emails to resumes. What can be done (besides hitting the spell check button)?

I believe it IS a lost art and the school system is somewhat to blame. I couldn't believe it when my kids started doing essays and projects for school and submitted work with spelling and grammar errors and still got really good marks.

Apparently, as long as they "get the message across" the spelling and grammar doesn't matter!!

Personally, I try to ensure that whatever homework and projects that my kids do at home have been checked before they go back to school and I explain any errors.

Our younger son has real trouble with reading and spelling so we drill him with flashcards of his weekly "sight" words. It's slow going, but it seems to be working.

Well, in my generation I don't see any literary geniuses either, 30 something. I often wonder how people graduate from college with a bachelor or higher degree and they can't write their way out of a paper bag.
It is a sad state of Ebonics affairs.
Recently in a staff meeting I announced to my staff I am the supervisor not the proof reader and I fail to believe that my superiors would appreciate paying me such a healthy salary to be a proof reader.

What really bugs me is omitting periods. You have to go back and reread each sentence, trying to figure out where the period is supposed to be. I just don't understand that one myself. It makes a paragraph look like a big blob of alphabet soup. Please use periods, people. It helps the reader decipher the meaning of the sentences.

It also seems that they don't even know how use the "Spell Check" option even if it it's available.

(...and I didn't even have to spell check for this.)
