I was sitting next to him, and he looked me straight in the eye and said it. He said it with a straight face. I felt offended and amused, but still I tried to think of what other people would do. But what are we really supposed to do when that word slips out?

I don`t think he let it slip out ,you said he looked you right in the face and said it ,So he was fully aware you were there.He was trying to provoke you into a fight. One day he will say it to the wrong person and get hurt.
There is only 2 things you could do ,hit him and then he would say that N word persons are all violent or you ignore the silly bastard and realise he is more stupid, uneducated , unintelligent and ignorant and not worth the trouble.
Or look him straight back in the eye and say "that is only your opinion you old foolish white C--t and your opinion doesn't`t count any way".
He may have been KLAN member or a fool.That is the same thing isn`t it.

Don't worry about it too much. There is ignorance everywhere and there isn't anything we can do to get rid of it...
I would imagine you were offended, but I am guessing that was his intention too. In that case, don't lose any sleep over it, don't let him get the best of you.
When it happens tell the person they are ignorant and go on about your day, your life.

I wish I could make you feel better by saying ignore him...but likely it has no medicinal purpose for you whatsoever. It's pitiful that ignorance makes people this way. I say live and let live.... and live as you were born to live. The hell with everyone else if they can't accept you as you are.
