You could have a plugged fuel filter.low fuel pressure, resrticted exhuast or a tank of bad fuel. You need to scan the truck while your driving to watch the live data.It will tell you alot about whats going on at the time the condition occurs.

You have to start by asking the ovarious like is the handbrake on, does the transmission squeal when changing gears.
I'm 45 and have only ever owned cars between 1939 and 1975 thats my cut of year for when the quality of vehicles started going down hill.
It'll probably be the computer having a rest, take it to any modern mechanic and they'll connect it up to the mothership and tell you whats up without lifting a spanner. Fred Australia

The dual exhaust thing is a no-go. To stay emissions compliant you would have to put a cat on both banks of the engine. this would work but, its not as cool as it sounds. A cat back dual system will flow just as good. As far as your power issues go, get the cat replaced with a high flow and replace your O2 sensor, your truck will love you. I had a 91 dodge 150 p/u, I loved it super powerful and it only had a 318. The exhaust was an issue on mine as well. GOOD LUCK man.

the bonehead that said start with the fuel filter is wrong that would have nothing to do with it changing gears on its own. its probably something in the computer thats causing this problem

A good place to start would be the fuel filter.

I see one good answer here. Go to a MUFFLER/ EXHAUST shop and get the cat converter checked.
