Same reasons that led to establishing other colonies around the world!

It had a good port, it was easy to reach, it was a natural trading center - people thought they could make money by establishing a colony there, so they did. Almost all colonization has been done for economic reasons. The only exceptions are the religious colonies that have been set up from time to time, and the penal colonies, such as Australia - but even they were expected to turn a profit.

New York was not established. New Amsterdam was established and later renamed New York.

well, manhattan was established because of an age old maxim: buy low .... sell high

they were able to get the island very cheap, they stole it from the indians for 24 dollars ... and you know the result.
