It depends on where the crack is. If it's at a seam then it's best to remove the mud and tape and do it over with new mud. Other cracks can be covered with Spackle provided they're not large, There is a type of Spackle with an additive that makes it more flexible in an area that tends to re-crack. Also there is a mesh material that can be used on the wall before the patch is applied that minimizes re-cracking. For best results, don't apply it too heavily. It's best to do two coats if you need very much, or the patch may crack as it dries.

a drywall crack should be repaired with Drywall tape and compound, blended in to match the texture and painted. But if it is a hole or gouge in the rock and it is a smooth surface then spackling is acceptable and easier.

They are basically the same thing. Spacklling paste comes in smaller containers for DIYers. Your larger problem is WHY is there a crack there? Is the crack old or new? Is the wall old or new? Are you sure it's drywall and not hardkote? If you are going to just cover it, use mesh or paper tape and put two coats of mud on top of the tape. If you just use mud, the crack will be back.

With all due respect; they are essentially the same Base compounds. One or the other might also be infused with some POLY substance.

Bot should be applied in the same process; and as others state; you might determine some variables with regard to what and where the damage is.
