Yeah... that's why I don't like long drawn out generic shonen anime like Naruto and Bleach. There hasn't been any point in the series when I felt any suspense whatsoever that Naruto or Sasuke or Sakura or a dozen other people where going to die, no matter what insurmountable odds they were facing.

Get away from this generic stuff, and you will find many series where pivitol and central characters die and where the bad guys sometimes win in the end. Once you watch a couple of these, you start feeling anticipation and suspense, even when the main characters don't die, and do win. I would list some anime with bad ends, but I don't want to spoil anything. Cowboy Bebop has already been listed however, and is a prime example of what I am talking about.

Anime become leagues better, and much more unpredictable when you get away from the Narutos and Bleaches. For example, I'm watchin a series called Baccano! right now. Even though the show revolves around a bunch of immortals, I still don't know if they are going to live or die by the end.

Well, if the bad guys won, what would be the point in watching the show??? Anime is for entertainment, so if it doesn't have a nice ending, people won't watch it! In real life, the good guys win too, just with lots of sacrifices... Like, in all the rebelions and such, people in the end get what they want, right??? Anime is created from real life with a little supernatural(ok, a lot!!!), so it's supposed to end that way too!!! Though, the thing about good guys never dying can get a little bit extreme... But if you think about it, someone always dies in the end, so again, anime represents life!!!

Yes.

Although most of the time I loved the main characters, but it was intriguing to see them defeated. Totally. Not like they should die or anything.

Good guys always winning only proved that the villains are idiots. The good guys are like what, years younger than the bad ones, more inexperienced than they are but they still managed to kick these bad guys' @$$. I mean, how ironic. Then why create bad characters anyway? They should be at least able to defeat all the good guys (even cause death to several characters), then the good guys trained to be stronger, and eventually return them the "favor".

Besides, I have a somewhat fetish of main characters being badly injured. They give the feeling that "good guys aren't actually strong, after all", which I love. I would love to see a turn of events, when the good guys lose....

ever watched the Cowboy Bebop series? if not, make sure to watch it. at first, i really didnt get into it, but a buddy of mine got me hooked after a few episodes, and then when i watched the series the second time, it was even better. its not your typical ending to a series, it was so perfectly thought out, with all the little things tied up nicely, but not predictably, and all the symbolism of the show made so much sense at the end. i remember just sitting there at the end of the series for like a half hour like "oh my god... man..... oh my god...." lol. and that NEVER happens to me.
