You can just right-click and delete it. But I would advise moving it to some directory so you can find it later. Many people who delete it end up trying to find it at a later date even if its to have it in some tools folder instead of on their desktop

You have to right click on the icon and then the delete option or the remove from desktop option. Or you can go to personalization and remove it from there too. You go to personalization to put the icon back to your desktop too.
