Type defragment into your Help and follow instructions. It will take a long time to complete. Do not use your computer while it is defragmenting.

Defragmenting is the process of "physically" sorting files on the hard disk so that they can be loaded faster.

While you use your computer you create and delete files, and eventually the open space on the disk starts to look like Swiss cheese. Later, when the computer is looking for places to put new files, it will find that the available space is broken into pieces smaller than the file, and can't write the file as one large chunk of data. When the time comes to fetch the file again the computer is forced to get one part of the file, skip ahead to the next piece, maybe move backwards again for another... and every time it has to move the magnetic head it slows the process down.

Eliminating those holes and making the files continuous will improve startup time and make fetching files more efficient.

If your computer is busy (you can feel or hear the hard drive moving for no good reason), and you don't need to use it for a while, it's best to let it finish its job.
