When I close my laptop and come back to it in maybe, 10-15 minutes, the screen will resume but it'll take its time in the process. If i leave it closed for the night and come for it in the morning sometimes the screen will resume, most of the time it wont. When it wont, I usually turn the computer off with the power button and turn it back on without a problem. How do I get my screen back without shutting down my computer each time it decides to not appear? Is it a sleep mode, or a bad video drive?

- I do not select 'Sleep' or 'Hibernate' whenever I close my laptop.

I just log out and close the laptop.

If there is a lot of programs on your computer, it will take a long time to resume the screen and such when they are inactive but open for a period of time. Mostly the more RAM the less problems here. If your have 512MB be sure to upgrade to 1GB, or go with Windows XP.

How much memory do you have? I have 512mb and am in the process of getting another 512.

Vista is so big you must have at least 1gb RAM.

First, I have Vista set to "classic view." This makes it resemble XP and helps me manuever around.

I don't have mine go to sleep. When I am ready to quit for a while, I close the lid and let it shutdown.

Vista Power Options

Go to Control Panel and type the word "power" in the search box.

Click on Change power-saving settings. You will see a list of available power plans. Under the active power plan you will find the Change plan settings link. Click on it.

Now click on Change advanced power settings.

In the Advanced settings window scroll down until you find the Power buttons and lid section. In this section you will find the Start menu power button sub-section. Scroll down the Setting list and select Shut down. When you finished, click the OK button.

Now the Shut down button will be back in your Start Menu, just like in Windows XP.
