Well, I was rebuilding a gearbox this weekend and came to fiting the frame, tightened everything up, gear lever on, clutch cable on.. Anyway, i came to give it a quick check to make sure it was going throguh all the gears correctly, but i can only get neutral, 1st and 2nd, (and even they are hard to get into to) I know i have put it together correctly from the manual and there isnt anything obvious that is wrong.. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this.. ANYTHING?

Thanks.

Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.
Engines with horizontal and vertically split crankcases can have different solutions to similar problems.

This isn't directed to you Ant
A suggestion to all wanna-be mechanics -
After bolting the crankcase halves together, make sure the transmission will shift through all the gears and the crankshaft turns freely before continuing work.
That's a lesson from the school of hard knocks.

Right, calm down, its possible you haven't done anything wrong.

Motorcycle gearboxes are what are called 'dog' boxes, which mean they need to be turned in order to select each gear.

Try rocking the rear wheel backwards and forwards as you make the gear selections, as this will enable the gears to align correctly as they are selected.

The other thing to check (if any), do the shafts have any shims at the ends, in the gearbox housing. In some cases an incorrect endfloat can lead to similar symptoms.

sounds like either the gear selector lever is is a little bent in and catching on (maybe) the bolt holding the side stand bolt. The other thing is that it might be on the splines not quite correctly. It's possible the roller clutch bearings need re-greasing.
Without knowing more I can't help too much.

Rebuilding gearbox is a professional work. U have to get supervise from some professional auto technician having experience in previous gearbox building. Books don't illustrate all clear things.

Have you nay oil in the box yet? The forks could be sticking on the selector drum and will free up when they've a little of the slippy stuff on them.
