For thousands of years humans have enjoyed music, even slamming sticks on some stones in a rhythmic pattern. And then to the more elaborate classical music. Music has always been one of the centric aspects of a festival or celebration. We listen to it and we love it. An animal, however, just recognizes it as sound, it doesn't interpret the melody or rhythm of it. We can.
Not only can we sense the melody and rhythm of music, but we enjoy it, it calms us and uplifts our mood. What's the explanation for this?

When used with singing, even the simplest of phrases take on new power, such as in Lightnin' Hopkins's "Mr. Charlie," where the little boy stops stuttering and starts singing:
Whoa Mr. Charlie,
Do you know that your rollin' mill is burinin' down?
Mr. Charlie, Mr. Charlie,
Your old rollin' mill is burnin' down!
(Mr. Charlie said, "We ain't got no water, Boy."
Just let that old mill burn on down.")
Even without words, the tempo, scales, patterns, consonances and dissonances, special effects, and types of instruments define a culture or subculture, a generation or sub-generation, or even a political voice, so there's lots to identify with.
It's not true that animals don't appreciate music. It's just that we don't normally think of the can opener as a musical instrument.

Because it reflects us, it translates emotions into another language, the language of music.
By the way, it has been proved by scientists that animals do enjoy music and can understand themes and melodies in music.

If music be the food of love, play on. That's from Willie Shakespeare,
Music was the first language of homo sapiens. And then humankind moved on to words...

I don't know how you explain something you cannot see or touch. I do know that music has the ability to calm, make one cry, make one want to get up and dance -- good music can "take you out of yourself."

it is a reflection of things we see in everyday life or situations we have faced or are facing. It helps sort through feelings in a retrospective way that ONLY music can provide.

i think that the reason we are so attracted to music because we feal what others do, we understand what they say and we can relate, and to us anything that appeals to our ears will then apeal to our minde.
