You sound just like me. I was skeptical of Ebay bigtime. I can only tell you that Ebay has a pretty good reputation for preventing rip-off's. One thing I would caution you about. That IS a major purchase. Definitely pay thru Paypal because that keeps a record of EXACTLY where your money goes. And check the sellers previous items for sale. I was told it's a red flag if this is a one shot item and he normally sells completely different merchandise. That indicates that his account has been hacked.
Look at how long he's been a member and go back and read ANY negative feedback he's had. That's what I do.
I haven't made a $1500 purchase...yet....but I've spent a lot of money on Ebay items. I've always gotten exactly what I was promised and in a timely manner. Above all, if you're having doubts just pick up the phone and call Ebay. They will be glad to help you by explaining exactly what happens if you don't get your item.
I've been "ebaying' for about six years and I've never had a problem. I think you should call them. No one can explain what your recourse is in the event you get ripped off like Ebay themselves can. The people here, all we can do is tell you our experiences as an individual and that's not going to protect you.

Really there is no absolute guarantee, it is always a chance or gamble. If that was me making that purchase, I would click the Paypal insurance button and get that for sure. The amount of items he has sold makes a difference to me in higher dollar purchases. Of course the feedback is key as well. If his feedback is 100% and he has sold like thousands of items, I would probably take a chance. Then again, a sure thing is buying one from a Computer Store, with a big name, as they do back up their stuff more easily. Also, ask a question about the computer that isn't listed, and see how long it takes him to get back to you.....You can get a feeling from that too. Thats a lot of money to take a chance on, but people do it all the time. Just do the research. Happy Bidding...

Don't be just concerned about his feedback score. You should also be concerned about how long the seller has been a member of Ebay. Someone who has been a member for a long time is less likely to rip you off. By the way, if you want to know a way to get money back every time you buy something on Ebay, then send me an email.

Read through the feedback really good. If they are 100%, then you shouldn't worry, but See how many items like that he has sold already. Read the policy section on the ebay home site and see if you can get more information. Email the guy and see how he seems in an email. Sorry but that is all I can think of. Hope this helps.
Good Luck!!

If you contact ebay and ask them about other forms of insurance i'm sure they can help you out. Other than that I think all you have to go by is what their feedback and how many people actually bought from this user and liked them. It's a risky thing dealing with ebay but good luck.

Paypal offers some insurance as long as you use your credit card but to be honest, you're in the lap of the gods.
I wouldn't use ebay for any major purchases. You never know if it's a fraudster who's hijacked someone else's account.

If you have the wheels, pay for large items Cash On Delivery only. A few hundred dollars extra to spend on something is a small amount of money for insurance. Not only that, but you will have fun getting out to see the country.

Paypal offers insurance, I think it is up to $5000 but I'm not sure. Also try to buy from an ebay store or something.
There is no way to absolutely be sure, but this is as close as you can get.

I was leary about my first eBay purchase also. You just have to make sure that the seller has a high rating. Look for the stars and points.
