I replaced my CD writer with a DVD writer a couple of days ago. I burned a DVD or two then. The day after when I tried to turn on the computer it shut down itself after a couple of seconds. after a couple of tries it worked again and I used the PC for like two hours. The day after this repeated again and I couldn't turn the PC on. I disconnected the DVD writer and my CD ROM (suspecting power insufficiency) and tried again and the PC just went off automatically after like 2-3 seconds every time. What do you think id the problem?

If I wanted to save my files and photos on two partitions on my harddisk on that PC what should I do? My wife will kill me if I can not revive our photos!

weak or dead power supply. as for partition, don't. with hard drives as large as they are now there's no need to partition hard drive. keep photos in MyPhotos and make folders beneath it.

It might be possible that drivers of that dvd writer might not have worked well and corrupted the OS try one of the following stuff..

1) Try to start system in safe mode by pressing F5 several times (it takes time to hit the key at right moment) and create backup of the files and goto the best System Restore point

2) Repair the OS(Select leave the current partition intact), this will insure that iles and folders are safe

Hope this will solve ur problem

I think it's the ram that causes the problems. Check the module for malfunctions. My friend had a similar problem with you. I thought it was a virus but I lately traced that it 's the hardware that defects but don't disclose on hardware failure, check your OS for viruses. By the way, does it mostly shuts down while booting?

It is always a good idea to partition your HD. Keep progs and OS on C and put anything else on your other partition/s.
