I got a lava lamp, and I plugged it in, and it's just a big rock instead of it floating around like it should...

I don't know why. Is it just heating up? Do I need to take a cap off on top? Why does it look like that?

It takes a while before it starts working right. It needs to heat up first. It usually takes about an hour or so before it actually moves around. Don't take the cap off... if you are referring to the "bottle cap" looking thing on the top (and not just the little cup thing) - never take that part off or you will be buying a whole new lamp.

If it's brand new, it will need to stay on several hours before the "lava" starts floating. Even after you've used them a few times, it takes a little while for them to warm up. The heat from the light bulb starts the lava moving. I have 3 and love all of them :)

Here's a trick: Shake it first, then put it on it's stand. It'll move around more quickly. I don't have the oil type of lava lamp, I have the one with the sparkles in it, but that's how it works.

it takes a while to heat up but if it dont after a couple of hours then i would take it back because i had one that would not do anything after a day of having it plugged in so i just went and traded it for one that works

yeah, mine usually takes like 30 minutes before it starts looking neat - it just needs to melt some :)

no need to take the cap off... good luck :)
