No, you don't have to reinstall anything. Just SNAP IN the module, and your computer and Windows will reconfigure itself automatically.

It's a great idea to add an additional 512MB. While you might not see more speed immediately, you will run into less trouble when multiple windows are open. One BOTTLE NECK of speed is your hard drive speed. But even with double speed hard drives, you would not see any increase in performance if you have lots of RAM. (There is no double-speed hard drive... that technology is pretty much MAXed out.) But avoiding the use of Virtual memory on your hard drive will help a great deal.

Double check various websites for the exact memory to match what you have. I buy from www.CoastMemory.com for the most part, because their "guarantee that it works" policy is awesome. But Crucial.com is great too - visit http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2594269-5032657 Look up your computer and model, and try the SCAN MY SYSTEM tool.

Follow these steps if you never do any computer maintenance.
- run Disk Cleanup - from the System Tools section of Accessories
- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.
- run DEFRAG - from the System Tools section of Accessories.

Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.

Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com

Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

No, you don't have to re-install Windows.
No, your hard drive will be fine.

However, your PC might not let you add a 512 memory chip. You need to check on the web site for the manufacturer. Odd as it sounds, some PC's require like chips to be installed. That means you would either have to add a 256 chip, or replace your existing chips with two 512 chips.

RAM (Random Access Memory) is Logical Memory - it is used for fast loading of applications. The file are saved on the Physical memory which is the hard-drive. You would not have to reinstall anything.

The problem is certain models do not support others. The best would be to buy the RAM from the same manufacturer. If you don't understand how to install the RAM, consult a local technician to buy and install it for you.
