I don't see why people like me, the average Joe, have to apologise for slavery. The rich and their descendents must apologise for it, not us. The working class suffered due to slavery as we starved to death as slavery was cheap labour which meant that the rich didn't care if our crops failed. If anyone should apologise or compensate, it should be Tate and Lyle or Barclays Bank or similar companies plus the coastal African ethnic traders who profited (who have kept strangely quiet about the issue). The British were enslaved by the Romans, but in retrospect, the Romans were good for us by teaching us civilisation. I don't see us calling for compensation from the Italians. Whatever the evils of slavery were, nobody is suffering from it nowadays apart from the wage slaves and the slaves of prostitution. We need to free these people. Discuss....(?)

Firstly, an apology is in the spirit of unity, harmony and reconciliation which no way puts blame or shame on anyone. Its just recognition and acknowledgement of past hurts and is not personal but is a acknowledge as a nation.
Secondly slavery is still alive and well in many countries of the world. While there are humans who seek to exploit their fellow man this disgusting and abhorrent trade will continue. Do a little google search and be shocked by what you find.
Thirdly you have a valid point about the wage slaves and prostituion but see point 2 for the reason these exist.

Allright, well, here's the way I see it. Throughout history, every nationality and ethnicity has been enslaved one way or another to someone else, and, hate to say this, but, hear me out, every other ethnicity other than the Africans brought over who were sold by their own people, by the way, banded together and either overthrew or ran off the enslavers.
As for me and mine, hell, we're Upper East Tennesseeans since about 1780something, and, we. did. not. own. slaves. Okay? For real, dudes! I can even pull up the census, property tax, and historical records to prove it. As far as that goes, no one living in the US today is or was a slave, or a slave owner, and people need to STFU about stuff that happened 150 years ago and start worrying about what needs fixing in their own homes and communities right NOW! Dammit, people, some out there can't see the bloody forest for the trees.

I completely agree with you. As you so intelligently point out with your example, every race of people has been subservient to some other race of people at some time or another since the beginning of time. No apology is due, and certainly no reparations. Get over it and get on with your lives.

My ancestors weren't even in the US at the time of slavery. I'm with you... we need wage equality and equal opportunity rather than reparations. Then everybody can start off the same.

Damn near everybody on this planet has been a slave at one time or another. If you are not holding slaves now, but your ancestors did, what is there to apoogize for? You cannot help what your great great grandfather did.

Can o' worms. Basically, my mommy said I don't have to apologize if I personally didn't do anything. And I didn't do it.
