Under what circumstances should we break the rules. Think about this? For sake of aurgument for both libs and conservatives lets say we have a real all out war that is justified and our enemy is not playing by the rules and we are on the verge of losing. Do we throw out the rules of engagement and the geneva convention rules. This question is not for whether or not we should be in Iraq but whether how far are you willing to go for a war that you find legit.

I LEts put this in a smaller scale- If a man breaks into your home at night with your family asleep and he has no weapon and you have gun are you going to use it or say to yourself it isnt fair and fight him fist to fist?

Given your scenario, I do believe we toss out rules. It's war; there are no "rules" in war. It's brutal; it's ugly and lots of people die. It's not supposed to be pretty, and it's not supposed to be fair.
------------
It's too bad so many people don't seem to see that this "libs"/"cons" thing is just what America doesn't need during war.

Are we to assume that the US would be following the rules? What started this world conflict? The CIA covertly sabotaging the Canadian government and the US going after the Canadian Arctic and ending up at war with the Russians who are doing the same thing.
So we begin to lose the war with the Russians. They have biologicals, chemicals, Big Bombs, nuclear bombs etc. The Russians, the president claims, are cheating.
I hope we don't start using our WMD. But, I believe a president like Bush would begin to use tactical nuclear weapons.
There are many rules of war. Genocide for instance is being promoted here today. Gas, biologicals are not allowed. Nor is torture or the killing of civilians.

First of all, who said we are losing ? The liberal, agenda driven, media. Look up some info on your own. As compaired to other wars we have been involved in, this isn't close. Look up numbers of insurgents eliminated (good luck). It starts to make the war seem... successful.
Playing by the rules: Continuing to fight the war in our rules puts us on the high road. We are the better for it. What would we do, our own suicide bombers? Not likely. Not ethically. Not nationally acceptable anywhere. We would be the red-headed step child of the world if we did so. But as it is, terrorism is what is wrong. It is not acceptable anywhere in the world. There is a right way and a wrong way to anything, even war. Terrorism is not war. Terrorism is meant to strike fear into the hearts of everyone involved for a purpose: women, children, fathers, mothers, visitors, red cross workers, media personnel, too scared to fight for what is right in order to save their own lives. Pure cowardice. The easy way to solve their problems in the short term. All they have to do is hold out until the short attention spanned Americans tire and pull out. Then... they win.
Someone once said, "Your silence, gives your consent." - Plato, I think. To all countries that have stepped out and left us to pick up the tab... Thanks. You have given your consent to terrorism. They are the ones we should be upset with. We are doing the right thing. They are doing... Nothing.

To hell with the rules. At that point it becomes like a street fight. Fight to win with whatever it takes.

If he enters my home without a weapon, I will give him just 1 chance to leave. If he does not take that chance, his fate is in his own hands.

If you (those in control, not individual rogues) are unwilling to play by the rules, you have no integrity with those for whom you are fighting.
