Most people like the view of water and the availability of beaches, water sports, boating and fishing. Proximity to large bodies of water usually moderates temperatures in both summer and winter ( although the effect dies off exponentially with a half-distance of 7.5 miles ). Proximity to coastal areas often means proximity to ports so transportation expenses for seaborne goods is sometimes less. Because of these advantages, larger cities usually arise so urban dwellers find themselves most often near coastal areas or connected to one by rivers. Most urban centers, with the notable exception of Jerusalem, were founded near some kind of coast.

You didn't ask for the disadvantages.
