The most important characteristic for me has to be honesty.

Other important characteristics are intelligence, common sense, financial stability and responsibility, nurturing, easy going, a sense of humor.

the first thing I check for is a pulse and then I move on to other vital signs. Eyes clear, not cloudy, BP 120/80, & 98.6 core temperature. After that, a little knock in the knees to check reflex. I usually ask to fill out the questionaire form for other related illnesses. Sometimes a full exam may be necessary, I check for intelligence levels, also, humor, integrity, compassion levels, turn on/offs, moral statistics, etc etc.

I'll admit to being slightly shallow and say, however, physical attraction is always helpful. ;p
