Three suggestions:
1) http://www.patternreview.com to help you select a pattern. Jalie 2005 seems to be an overwhelming favorite

2) Cotton jersey is cheaper, but interlock is more stable and easier to handle -- I'd suggest interlock (which looks the same on both sides) instead of jersey for the first t or two.

3) This is for when you get some experience under your belt:

You might also check to see if you can find a copy of KwikSew's book Sweatshirts Unlimited. This has a nice basic discussion of sewing dartless basics like t-shirts and sweatshirts on both a sewing machine and a serger. Very step by step, even if the illustrations are very 80's. Good information on making design changes to basic patterns, too.

Look at patterns in the sewing dept of Wal Mart.
Or you could take an old tee shirt and cut it apart and use it for a pattern.
A tee shirt is a very simple thing to make.
You can also look at patterns on line at
Simplicity.com
Vogue.com
McCall.com
I would recommend Simplicty as being the easiest patterns to follow.
