Last night while out on the deck at about 11:30, I observed a very bright patch in the sky, as I looked directly at it, it would slowly moved apart and disperse, but i could see it peripherally! Both my husband and myself observed it for quite some time, does anyone know what this may be? We are in Northern Pennsylvania if that helps?

It is probably related to aurora and is fading just below the limit of vision and your non-peripheral eye cells are fatiguing so you are losing sensitivity in that area. Peripheral has fewer color and more night vision cells. Using peripheral vision for night detection of movement has long been a guarding suggestion.

Hi Jennifer,
Hmmm, have you ever seen the northern lights from there? I saw them in New Hampshire years ago.
The phenom. you are seeing was reported on earlier this year. We've been aware of luminescent cloud formations for some time. The NOAA folks, (and others,) don't really know what is causing the clouds to shine. We are watching them from the space station and other satellites. We generally see them over the poles, much like the auroras but they have been seen in Canada. I guess its natural that they would accumulate and then dissipate like any other cloud formation. Your observation is the first I've heard of down here in the States. I've been watching here in southern Ohio.
Oh well, good luck and watch the news... maybe someone will solve the mystery.
