Ok this is going to sound unbelievable, but my neighbor's butchered chickens in their backyard yesterday. And before you ask, I do not live in a rural area, I live in Alexandria VA in a very expensive residential townhouse community. The people in question recently moved into a duplex that borders our community. I called the police and they said they can't keep chickens but there is no law against butchering them. However if I can catch them next time with the live chickens right before they kill them, then call and they will come out. But after they are dead, no crime. Come ON! This can't be right. Next can they start bringing in cattle and pigs and start processing them? Does anyone have any idea where I can start lodging complaints? This is unreal and I am totally freaked out about it.

To those of you who tell me to mind my own business I say this. It is hard to mind your own business when you can't walk out in your backyard without seeing butchering.
To those of you who tell me it's just a chicken. I agree. I grew up in a rural community. But people I know didn't kill livestock in their backyard. They either took them in for butchering to a shop or did it away from the house. This is third-world crap and because we live in such close proximity, it can't be health for them to be washing blood and guts all over our adjacent property. Come on. If they want to be rural "folk" then move to the country.

Yeah gunplumb...that is my dog..Point?. But I clean up after her and don't wash her waste into other people's yards...And guess what..if I didn't clean up after her there are laws that protect my neighbors. And guess what else, I bet if the neighbors start butchering dogs in the backyard, your response might be slightly different.
Thanks for everyone who gave helpful answers. I am finding help on the health department website.
To the rest of you, I give up. I think I'm outnumbered and most of you think I shouldn't be offended. I'm also thinking that you never worked hard, saved, and invested $500,000 to buy into a nice area only to have the Beverly Hillbillies move in next door. I hope I don't have to resale soon. Butchering neighbors are not a good selling point.

It’s true that there is no law against butchering chickens. The police are right, if they are raising farm animals then they can get fined and the animals removed. You can also try filing a noise complain or something like that. Find out what the rules of the community are and make them work for you. The police just need an excuse and it’s up to you to provide them with one.
Some people forget that they are not on their farm anymore. They should show a little courtesy and kill the chickens in the basement or something.

Try callling their LandLord, or if there is a HomeOwners Association give them a Call. I Hate to say this because I do understand your feelings. I was raised on a Farm and Chickens were considered food and my Mom killed one every Sunday for Lunch after Church. I fed those Chickens daily and played with them and it was really hard to see them killed, but when you are hungry, you will learn to eat the meat or go hungry. The people you are talking about are obviously Country Folk and this is their way of Life. Have you tried talking to them? You'd be surprised how far an act of kindness will go..

I own chickens for their eggs, and I like one of them as a pet. But I don't see what's so wrong about butchering farm animals. Chickens are mostly kept for their eggs and meat. I live in Indonesia and everybody owns chickens and butchers them daily. Even I used to do that, although I'm not Indonesian.
By the way, if there's no law for it, then you can't do much about it. I think you should get used to it gradually. They're "bloody" chickens!

Your local zoning commission would be a good start. Also, you should film the slaughter if possible, thereby demonstrating they WERE alive there. Sending this complaint to the police in a certified mail letter would send the message that the police can be held accountable for their lack of action, which often promotes more reasoned responses (as in - Hey! I could be held accountable for this!).

This has only happened once, right? Unless they're doing it on a production scale I suggest you mind your own business. Some folks like their meat really fresh.
And aren't YOU the one who had the dog what liked to crap everywhere (prior resolved question)? Live and let live.

Call the Department of Public Health. Fowl for human consumption must be inspected. If that doesn't work call the police as soon as you are aware of chickens on the premises.
