So, my fiancee and I are having a debate and can't find anyone to answer our question. We are not having a fight, but are debating the percentage of fault at work.

Background: Last night about midnight, we were sleeping in the middle of the living room floor. Before bed, I had been working on some photos on my laptop and then fell asleep with the laptop next to the air matress on the floor.

She gets up for some water and comes back and notices I was sleeping on the other side of the bed now so she goes to the side with the laptop... and STEPS RIGHT ON THE SCREEN and CRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Oh snap. What percentage of fault is this? She believes that it is 50/50 because it should not have been on the floor. I believe that's silly. I am willing to accept some fault, but not nearly 50. 5%?

Anyway, what do you think? Should she have been more cautious of where she was stepping, possibly looking to where she was stepping? It certainly was no surprise that it was there.

Thanks!

Walking around the house at those wee hours can be a hazardous proposition. The dangers only escalate in a household where computers are stored on the floor. If floor storage is a common concept, then the fault should fall in the 30/70 range in your favor. However, if you do not usually store computers and other valuables (priceless paintings, wedding rings, antique china) on the floor, then the blame should be inverted to 70/30 to her favor.

You should not have left it on the floor. You are 100 percent at fault. Your fiancee is trying to accept 50% at fault because she's a nice person and loves you. She figured that excepting 50% of the fault instead of telling you the truth would defuse the situation. Now be a man, tell her your sorry you left it on the floor and that you are 100% at fault, and that it was sweet of her to try and accept 50% of the fault.

I am sorry but I will have to side with your wife on this one. I work for Texas Children's Hospital and we issue laptops out to many of our home based and mobile workers. We get them back with cracked screens all the time and it is ALWAYS the user's fault. First of all, a laptop can cost anywhere from $500-1000+ dollars. If your money were made of glass or some other brittle material,. would you leave it on the floor?
A laptop computer NEVER belongs on the floor in the first place. I, too am guilty of bringing a laptop to bed with me at times, but I have never left it on the floor... too many chances of someone accidentally stepping on it. I won't leave it on the dresser or end table either.... it can be knocked off.

My last point...

I don't know how many years you have been married... but when I got married my father asked me.... now son... do you want to be RIGHT (correct)? Or do you want to be HAPPY? You decide.

dude no offense, but you should be thankful she's willing to take 50/50... honestly, debating over it is silly, coz she's right, as it shouldn't have been left on the floor. yes she could have been more cautious, nevertheless leaving stuff like that on the floor for someone to accidentally step on it, and half-awake at that certainly leaves a sense of fault on your part, since it IS your laptop, and as owner should be responsible for keeping it safe. so the 50/50 deal is all right, if you ask me.

anyways, just my thoughts, hope you wont take offense...

First, it sounds like it was an accident to begin with. It's not like she hit your computer with a hammer. It was an accident.
Secondly, it sounds like both of you contributed to this unfortunate event.

It sounds like your girlfriend was trying to be considerate. I would have told you to move back to your side but instead, she was nice enough to go around the bed and sleep on your side.

Your girlfriend sounds like a really nice person. You should not be blaming her for any of this.

I am going with her, she is right, there are a lot of places to put a laptop, but for it to be on the floor, in the middle of the night.........not smart.

A computer does not belong on the floor.
No matter what you were doing.

I would say it is your fault for not putting it up when you were done.

It's all your fault - you left it out where it could be damaged.

Once you've been married long enough, you'll learn that everything is your fault. Even the weather...
