My husband and I are both doing working on our MBA and we will be finished in December. He is an electrical engineer working as an applications engineer. Everyone on his job has basically said why are you wasting your time, why don't you get a CCNA or become a PE. Engineering and business doesn't mix, etc.. My husband says he believes they are envious and are trying to discourage anyone from progressing.
I am a registered nurse and I have heard the same types of negative comments. Why don't you get your masters in nursing? Why don't you get certified in this or that.

My reply is that a MBA will make you multidimensional , and with diversify your career field, enabling you to be an desktop engineer and also lead a group of desktop engineers.
Being in an MBA program teaches one to work as a part of a team, as an individual in a team, and as a leader. Any higher level education also leads one to expand his or her mind and become a more rounded and critical thinking adult in his or her personal and professional life.

"What Can I do?"

You can learn to construct questions properly so that people don't waste time clicking to see the details unless the topic is of interest.

If you have an Engineering degree, a Master's in Engineering Management is probably better than an MBA these days. Too many people get a generic MBA and don't benefit. Also, get your PE license.

ps It doesn't sound to me like you are a "Desktop Engineer". Maybe a technician...

If your goal is to be a desktop engineer for the rest of your life, then be the best one you can be and get certifications for the specific things you need to do that. If, however, you have ambitions of going beyond your current job some day, and perhaps managing something, then you are correct in going for the MBA. It may not help you with what you are doing at this very moment, but it will make you eligible to be considered for higher positions in the long run.
