It is half the area A of the full circle which is A = πd²/4, where d is the diameter.

Thus the area S of the semicircle is S = (1/2)A = (1/8)πd²

So in this case S = 25π/8 = 9.8175

You will need to know the following:
semi-circle = 1/2 circle area
circle area = π r^2
r = 1/2 diameter

r=1/2(5)=2.5 inch
circle area = 2.5*2.5*π=6.25π
semi-circle area = (1/2)*6.25π=3.125π= 9.185 sq. inches

area of semicircle=half of area of full circle =1/2*pie*d^2/4
=>area=1/2*3.14*5^2/4=9.81sq.inch

Well, if the whole circle has an area of π*R*R, which is 3.1415*2.5*2.5, just divide the result by 2 and you have the answer.
