I am a homemaker - mother of two, wife of one. My husband and I have been married for 14 years. My kids are ages 12 and 11. I am 34 and my husband is 32...we intentionally had our children at a younger age, so we'd both still be young when they were ready to be "on their own". We BOTH decided that I would be at home with the kids from birth until they were old enough to be home alone for a few hours...that's when I'd get a job - if I want to. My husband makes plenty of money, and he doesn't really want me to work, but isn't going to ever stand in my way. He's not a caveman. Anyway, I interviewed for a job about a month ago, and when the interviewer asked about my lack of "real job experience" I told him that it was due to the fact that I've been a stay-home mom for the last 12 years. He said, "So, you've been on a 12 year-long vacation." The injustice here...I'm being discriminated against because I've stayed at home with my children? I realize they are both in school now, but they still require parenting. I clean, cook, run errands, take care of the bills, take care of the home, take my kids from place to place - constantly - if they are sick, I am the nurse. If I am sick, I still do my daily tasks! I don't get vacation time, sick time, overtime, or any other paid day an employee would get. I don't get a paycheck, but I work more hours than a full-time employee would. Need I go on? I never really complained until I was treated that way for that interview. He made it seem like what I do "doesn't count" ... go figure. By the way... I was going to get a job because I wanted to contribute to saving money for my children's future education. My husband already has benefits and 401k coming out of his check. We save for their college education, but I thought this would contribute even more money! I didn't want the job so I could spend the money on myself. I rarely do that. I always look after everyone before me. I did not get the job because I was not "qualified". I can type 100 wpm without mistake, excellent with math and spelling, can multi-task better than most people I know, and I'm a quick study.
