Because they don't think about their children. Men and women can equally be vindictive. Whoever starts the breakup is the responsible party for all the hurts. He/she would not go through counseling and tried to work things out for the family's sake. They shouldn't have said "for better or for worse" during the wedding ceremony; they couldn't be civilized for the sake of their children.

It's is sad adults do this. They try to buy their children and control them out of "love", but most often at the expense of the child. Adults should realize that the child didn't ask to be brought into this mess, and if they are to get divorced it should be peacefully done for the child. But all to often this is not the case. Perhaps it should be mandatory to involve a person like Dr. Phil so they might open their eyes and see the others they are hurting.
