All the experts say a girl should go when she turns 21, or about a year after she starts having sex. (Unless, of course, something is wrong). You DO NOT have to go just because you have your period!

There is no set age. You should be having annual checkups from a family doctor and at some time after you begin your periods and especially when you become sexually active. you should have your first vulvo-vaginal exam. She will only refer you to a gynaecologist if you have a problem which needs specialist diagnosis and treatment. Talk to your family doctor, she is quite capable of taking care of the sexual health needs of the normal teenage girl
