They speak Catalan, actually. They speak three languages: Spanish, Catalan and English, at least people that u meet in restaurants or other public places, people that u deal with when organising hotels etc. I think its worth learning Spanish though, cos its not so difficult and its good to know a language anyway. Dont get discouraged when u go to Barcelona and, although u'll make an effort to say a couple of words in Spanish u will normally get a response in English. This is what I experienced, anyway. And enjoy Barcelona, cos its amazing!! Stay close to Las Ramblas, cos this is when everything is happening.

Barcelona is part of Cataluña and they speak Catalan. They also speak Castillano (Spanish) and quite a few people speak English. Basque is from Pais Basco/Vasco which is further north, along the northern coast of Spain. If you make the effort to speak Castillano (Spanish) no matter where you are, you will find that the majority of people will understand you. Please make the effort to speak the language, a little can go a long way.

'I've heard the Barcelona people called worse!

The Basques live in the north on the Bay of Biscay, near the French border. Their main cities are San Sebastian and Bilbao.

Barcelona is is in the north east on the Med. and is the the Catalan stronghold.
The most spoken language here is Spanish, although Catalan is officially equal and has precedence.
So swot up your Spanish and learn 'good morning' and 'thank you' in Catalan!

Concentrate on your English first

They speak good English in Barcelona - you won't have a problem - just make an effort to speak Spanish and you won't go far wrong - they appreciate the effort of at least trying

They speak Spanish but their first language is Catalan ( a sort of French/Spanish/Romance language). I learned a little Spanish for my visit and they knew what I was saying.
