Do you prefer a car with an automatic transmission or a car with a standard transmission, and why?

A standard transmission provides better over all control on a vehicle than does an automatic. Fuel economy, weather conditions affect road surface traction, and many others all play into my love of manual transmission
I have driven 4500+ miles in a vehicle with two transmissions, the manual and automatic combined and that gives the worse of both worlds. However it never broke down either. If I remember the combination, it was manual into standard.
I owned a fleet of vehicles until just recently and my heavy movers were all manual the others were automatics. I have been selling them off since I was injured and im driving an automatic now and will probably never go back to manual transmissions due to my health.

oh ya, if you need a clutch for a manual transmission, your an amateur............no professional needs the clutch

When I was younger, 16-30, I enjoyed the stick shift cars. Now I prefer the automatic transmissions. The answer to your part of your question as to "why"---when I was younger, I thought it was fun to down shift, etc. and thought it was "cooler", as though I was a racer, or something similar. Now that I am older, I just want the ease of putting the car into "drive" and then going. :o)

it depends on the car. ANY car from the 60's HAS to have a manual transmission. it isn't fun otherwise.
we have 2 cars with manual and 2 cars with automatic, so if we want to bang gears we can.

Standard transmission (or manual in UK). Part of the fun of driving is changing gears -changing gears I'm good at but not parallel parking!

Well I haven't fully learned how to drive a stick yet. I would probably enjoy it more cause there is more power that comes along with a stick shift. So for now Automatic for me!

I prefer an automatic because I never learned to drive the other kind but I would be willing to learn.

I like automatic. I live in a very steep area and have not had the practice of a standard.

For everyday driving, auto. But it's fun to drive a stick every once in awhile. Just to prove I know how!
