Only three that I know of. The 1st degree is a college BA degree, the 2nd degree is a classification of murder, and the 3rd degree is either a police interrogation, or a test to become a third degree mason.

If you were given the third, that's it - that term originated in medieval times when a Queen tried to make punishment more "just" and introduced 3 degrees of standard punishment.

Many people *assume* that it's masonic in nature, but that is not true.

I don't know how many degrees, but this phrase comes from the free masons.
