I agree context. Usually if you're referring to a specific topic you don't always need to know every word to understand the point of the idea. I think it's a special phenomenon.

Usually if someone is speaking and they say I word that I don't know the meaning of I'll ask. If asking is not possible then i'll look it up if i care enough to know.
