The bag is filled with air to protect the crisps from breaking.
If the bag was full the crisps would be all crushed by the time you got them.

Because the potato chip companies are saving money by letting the consumer pay for a bag of air.

Doesn't it say on the bag that amount is by weight and not volume? They puff air into the bag to help keep them from breaking, too.

If it was filled completely there would be no room for them to move around during shipping. By the time you opened them they would be dust. Oh yeh, and the money thing too.

when originally packaged it needs to meet a certain amount of mass, and when its shipped and traveling the chips fall to the bottom of the bag, they were more spread out before they were shipped.=)

it's more profitable for the company making them, as they then can make double the packets with the same amount of chips, selling double the amount and increasing their profit margins...that's life!
