Well, theological reasons of our origins and place in the universe aside, overall it could be said that we are superior over other creatures because we can destroy the world a thousand times over with the press of a launch button created with our intellect, while the better angels of our reason and morality tell us not to. Lower animals cannot comprehend these things, nor can they create great works of art that touch the souls of millions. They are just happy being what they are, and nothing more. In other words it's the noodles in our noggins. Although we all are branches from the same general tree, we are pretty much hardwired different than the other species.
Taking the difference in our brain structures into account and applying this massive difference, it can be said that in terms of language development, although other species do have varied non-verbal ways of communication through sight, smell, and body language, it is very limited in what it can express. Sure it can say "This is my territory, keep out!" or "Come no closer or I will attack!" or "It's time! I want little ones!" it is only through the communications means that mankind has developed, which by and far the most part can adequately allow us to convey abstract concepts and ideas which can lead us to anything we can imagine, from the technological, to the martial, theological, mainstream, esoteric, atypical, artistic, and beyond. And that, my friend is why we are superior over other creatures. Just my humble opinion to take or leave as you see fit. I hope this helps! :)

There are many reasons:
1. Humans have a more developed brain. We a physically capable of art, science, speech, martial arts, telepathy, etc....
2. Animals are - despite often being cute and fuzzy - quite delicious. If you look at the statistics, humans eat about 500 billion more times animals than animals eat humans.
3. Humans - despite having base animal instinct - are capable of overcoming it based on the rational mind. A dog will howl at the moon because its instincts tell it to. A human will ask "why?".
4. Evolution. Humans got intelligence before animals did. If you look at your language example. Animals haven't got beyond body language - growling, puffing up to look more intimidating, and the occasional screech. Humans can encompass thousands of ideas with a single word - and this one word can be interpreted in a thousand different ways by whoever hears it.
5. To date we have wiped out many hundreds of species. So, not only are we more intelligent than animals, but we are also winning the war.
6. Animals don't wear human skin.
Need I go on?

All creatures communicate. We all have different ways of doing so. Just because humans do it the way we do does not make us superior in terms of language. Actually we could learn something from other forms of life about communication. I could go on and on about our so called superiority but you said language development so that's my short answer

The answer is not to be found in language development! We are called rational animals, the others are called "brutes." As Hume (?) said, "Brutes abstract not." Humans abstract. Language is developed from abstracts, which are concepts. Concepts and abstraction allow us to pass on knowledge to our progeny, who can build a better life for themselves than we had. Animals, on the other hand, live in what author Loren Eisely calls "the eternal present," meaning they cannot get past being the same in this moment as in the last one, and may not recognize that 'moments' exist.

in terms of language development there is not much to say really because no other species has a written language so in that way we are 'superior'. but animals have a language of their own; we are too stupid to understand it though. i don't think we are superior to other animals. every living being has a role; only ours is the arrogant jerks who mess up the planet.

All beings are equal, in so far as llife is concerned. But human being is gifted with vocal chord, and the ability to language. His body enables him to write: and this is one of the reason that he devoloped knowledge, since all his past knowledge could be recorded through language and transmitted to others. thus we make shortcuts through several life times when we learn something from a book or listen to some one. This enabled civilisation, and knolwledge to the present extent. This is not our superiority, it is sijply that we are gifted with linguistic abilities. had Dolphins the ability to langiage, and articulation and writing, who knows, they also would have made great civilisations?

Bacteria, insects and some plant life are far more numerous then humans. Many species cooperate with their own so how are humans superior?? We can communicate, so do insects and bacteria so why would you think the way you do? we do the best at destroying our environment for the pursuit of capital gains...that's what makes us superior!

We are not superior to all animals when you break it down, there are a number of things nature gave to some animals but not to humans that we don't understand.
Animals were on this earth before we were and most probably will be after man is gone. Animals can survive in the wild using what nature gave them in places man could not survive on his on.
There are a few traits we share with animals, instinct for survival, reproduction, protecting our young.
Bottom line, we are superior to animals in certain areas and animals are superior to us in other areas.

Big Brains, opposible thumbs.
We make lots of tools & come up with plots & stragies to use them. Most complex animals have basic communication. Human commmunication expanded to cover tools and stratagy, then expanded into conveying history.
Between being able to share tool, stratigic and historical info makes humans one formidable species.
The "Who says man is superior?" crowd needs to get over themselves? We aren't the only dog in the show, but being in denial over our status as the 'Big Dog' is just ridiculous.

the latest in the evolution is the mind. we are the only creature with the mind. mind gives us power to manipulate nature. only problem is the mind is at a very infant stage now. so it is out of control like a child. but in time it will evolve into a more superior well controlled power which will not need any government or army or police to control them.
