I have a book called "The People's Almanac" that was written in 1975. The first chapter in it is called "The Other Side ofThe Looking Glass," and it lists past predictions about the future, as well as current (for 1975) predictions about the future. It's startling how totally far off they were.
Some of my favorites are from "Psychic" David Bubar:
-1975-1978 The devil will rule the Earth.
-During the last part of the 1970's, Americans will become involved in a mass physical-fitness program. Social drinking will virtually come to an end.
-From 1979 to 1982, the U.S. Government will control the mental activities of Americans through a "mind-shaping" program. All people who do not follow the line of thinking advocated by the Government will be brought before "Thought Courts" and be subject to "modified thought," or brainwashing... Individual thought impressions will be filed like fingerprints with the government.
-Before 1985, all children will be tested for physical and psychological abilities. Their future lives will be programmed through a computer, on the basis of the tests.
From 1981-1990:
-The chemicals and antibiotics consumed by present-day peoples will cause generations of the 1980s to be grotesquely tall. This added height will weaken the personality and the body.
-The telephone will be used for thought transmission.
From 1991-2000:
-People will be able to project, from conciousness, images of what they want, and produce those images in reality through a thought process called "Electronic Substance."

The apex you talk about is determined by the average level of stupidity of the general population. The flying car idea failed because it was impractical for several reasons, not the least of which was the skill level required to operate it. Most people are simply too stupid to be able to master the level of competence required for a flying car. The original idea was that thousands of returning fighter pilots coming home from World War 2 would fit right in to the idea of a flying car, but most people were not pilots and lacked the skills to handle a flying vehicle, had it even proved feasible.
To understand how stupid people are when it comes to cars, just drive on any highway for a half hour and you will see innumerable examples of unsurpassed stupidity. Now imagine these same idiots flying around in the sky.

Science will never, in my opinion, reach it's acme. In fifty years, some one will probably make the same statement, fifty years ago they said we'd all be using flying cars. While I don't agree nor disagree with that statement, until you can keep the greedy politicians out of office and put 'thinking' politicians into office, we will always be the backward civilization we have alway been.

There's been so much new technology in my lifetime already, I can't imagine what else they could come up with in the next fifty years. I'll be dead by then anyway.

I'm still dreaming of hover cars, all we can hope for the next 50 years is that earth hasn't been wiped out by nuclear weapon or a natural disaster

i don't think anything will ever stop developing and technology has never and will never make or ,lives easy, perhaps it has made life easier but not easy! there will always be more than one piece of technology on your hose that will supposedly 'hep' you but you will not know how to use!
technology only makes techno geeks life easier and even then they have to keep up with all developments!!
