I guess you mean like when people say "Keeping up with the Joneses".
Most people have Joneses. These are the other people who you would compare yourself with. Human nature is that of a social being and that implies primarily wanting to fit in and be accepted. In order to do so we must conform and we achieve conformity by comparing ourselves (our achievements, possesions, ....) to other. These others are often referred to as the Joneses whatever their names may be in each specific case.
